Undeterred by a brisk sea breeze across Sidmouth bay and under a cloudy sky, I joined the band of Wild Thyme Border Morris as it made its debut in front of an intrigued and delighted public on the sea front at Sidmouth, Devon yesterday (20th February 2011).
Many Morris dancing sides have an open door policy to newcomers and welcome both new dancers and musicians but Wild Thyme Morris distinguishes itself by the degree to which it actively encourages participation from passers by and provides free Morris dancing tuition to the public at folk festivals and other events.Since last weekend was the occasion of this years Sidmouth Folk Festival singers and musicians Winter reunions, it was an excellent opportunity for Wild Thyme Morris to take to the streets for its debut performance.
Sticks were clashed by Morris novices and the more experienced alike, traditional English tunes were played by the Wild Thyme Morris band (allegedly nicknamed The New Herbie-side Banned) and, despite decidedly chilly weather, a good time seemed to be had by all.
Determined to put Wild Thyme Morris on the map, Sue White (photo left), who is the organiser of Wild Thyme Morris, has a long list of folk festivals and other events that she is visiting in 2011.So, if you are interested in dancing in public or the performing arts generally, enjoy playing an acoustic musical instrument (at any level of expertise), would like to learn Morris dancing, or would just like to get together with a group of publicly spirited individuals who are intent on dancing, playing traditional English folk tunes and generally having a good time in public, why not check out Wild Thyme Morris and, judging from my experience, you will be given a very friendly welcome. There is no minimum standard for musicians or dancers. All age groups are encouraged to join in and there is even a Wilde Thyme Morris Facebook page so you can find out where they are visiting next! Perhaps I'll see you there.
