Although this Sunday afternoon Klezmer / Eastern European session at The Fat Pig, Exeter is still relatively new it seems to be achieving an amazing following with many excellent musicians attending from local Klezmer / Eastern European bands.
After spending the last month practicing my limited repertoire of Klezmer / Eastern European tunes, and although I was also attending the Sidmouth Folk Festival musicians Winter reunion at the Radway Inn, Sidmouth last weekend, I was determined to make it to this Exeter session as it had proved good entertainment for me in previous months.
I was not disappointed. The session absolutely rocked! Word of the quality of this pub session must be getting around because there were significantly more musicians this time, including an excellent double bass, all squeezed into the back room to the extent there was little space for non-musicians, although a few of the public managed to cram themselves in.
If you are interested in enjoying a Sunday afternoon listening to live music with a distinctly Klezmer or Eastern European theme, or checking out quality musicians who play in local Klezmer bands, based on my experience yesterday, the session on the third Sunday of the Month at around 3pm is worth a visit. (As always, check with the pub beforehand that the session is taking place as schedules sometimes change).
For my own part, I'm already hard at work learning new Klezmer and Eastern European tunes so I can participate more fully in the next session at The Fat Pig, 2 John Street, Exeter on the third Sunday of next month :-)
