Friendly Wells Tavern, Exeter folk music session second and fourth Wednesday of the month

At last I managed to get to the Wells Tavern session at 21 Well St, Exeter and was given a very friendly welcome by the other musicians and hosts Becky and Jon of Devon Strings Workshop in a pub where there was plenty of room for musicians to play with great acoustics.

Even better, Becky and Jon informed me that they were holding their Klezmer and Eastern European session at the Fat Pig, Exeter again on Sunday 16th January at 3pm.

Over the last few weeks since my initial exposure to Klezmer, I have been practicing the tunes Becky and Jon gave me very hard and I was pleased to get the opportunity of playing three of them in the company of these very good Klezmer musicians.

However, as it turned out, many of the tunes played were traditional English folk tunes which is very much my own home ground. I suspect the style of tunes played very much depends on who turns up.

So, based on my first visit, if you are looking for a friendly musicians session where there is a wide range of folk music styles available and welcomed, the Wells Tavern at Exeter session second and fourth Wednesday of the month is worth a visit (although always check with the pub beforehand in case of changes of schedule to avoid any potential disappointment).
