What a great traditional English folk music tune session I had last night at The George, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. Regular host Chris Timson was away at a festival but Nick and all the others really made me feel welcome as together we played our way through a fantastic list of English traditional folk tunes and a few nice French tunes too :-)
Currently (and it is always worth checking with the pub before travelling) these English music sessions are taking place at The George, Woolley St, Bradford on Avon, BA15 1AQ on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Parking, I was told, is a bit tricky in Woolley Street but available in the streets nearby, however, I had no trouble parking in front of The George in my campervan but that might have been because I was rather early.
I also hear that there is another English folk tune session now every two weeks on a Wednesday at 8.30 pm at The Royal Oak, Lower Bristol Rd, Bath BA2 3BW. This is a new session and is run by Anne Gregson who is the main organiser together with Bath fiddle maker Corrie Schrijver with a little help from Chris and which started following some very successful English tune sessions at The Royal Oak during the Bath Folk Festival 2010. I am certainly looking forward to checking this one out too.
Chris tells me that he is happy for people to phone him or Anne on 01225 863762 to check for details on either session or visit their home page.
So, if you are looking for good traditional English folk music sessions with some excellent traditional English dance musicians, why not give these sessions a try? Judging from my experience, you will get a friendly welcome. Have you been to these sessions? You are welcome to comment below just click on comments :-)
