Wessex Folk Festival 2008 a stunning success

Hope Square in Weymouth, Dorset on England's South Coast rocked last weekend with a stunning feast of music at the Wessex Folk Festival which entertained an appreciative audience of possibly thousands.

Bright sunshine, outstanding free music and a cafe continental harbour ambience, with passing sailing, fishing and pleasure boats, all added to the delightful cocktail. There can have been few more exciting, uplifting and just sheer fun places to be in the UK over the last few days.

Happy Hopcott was there and it was legendary.

Besides the free music in Hope Square, there were buskers, workshops, dancers of all kinds, strange horses roaming the harbour streets and just lots of smiling people dancing, singing and having loadsa fun.

Over the next few days, I will be sorting through the hundreds of photos of the performers, organisers, street scenes and workshops that I took over the weekend and will be putting them here for your delectation together with some quite fascinating stories about the interesting people I met.

Hope to see you here to share my memories of the Wessex Folk Festival and perhaps you might like to share some of yours too below in the comments section.

First of my featured bands are the Jigsaw Folk Rock Band who are young, talented and have a raw energy that gets people off their seats and dancing anywhere they can.

Bye for now

Hi Rob
Shame you missed seeing the awesome Last Night's Fun and the legendary Dick Gaugahn at the concerts on Friday and Saturday nights. Last Night's Fun, ably supported by the Sailor's Return 'super group', Camilla and the Can Openers (aka Paul, Nigel and Pam Dentith), took full advantage of the superb acoustics in Hope Church and played a storm. What a great way to start the 2008 festival. Saturday night with Dick Gaughan was no less impressive. The raw emotion and passion he puts into his performances is mesmerising and humbling. Real music from the gut! He's a pretty nifty guitarist too..... Support act No Fixed Abode, with Una's pure voice and Tony's uncluttered acoompaniment, were the perfect complement to Dick's raw style.

But hey, maybe I'm biased, I did book the concert acts after all!

Pauline, you are right, I have left writing up their wonderful performances too long.

However, fortunately, doing so now enables me to quote your most apt descriptions of their excellent performances.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks for a wonderful festival and I shall certainly be back next year.
